McIlroy Claims 20th PGA Tour Title at CJ Cup in Las Vegas

There are not many people in the world who have won 20 times on the PGA Tour.  Much like the Premier League's 100 goal club... if you are in it, you are a pretty talented individual.  That's a very decent way to describe Holywood's finest, Rory McIlroy MBE.  Just in case you are interested, there are now 39 golfers with 20 PGA Tour wins and 31 footballers with 100 Premier League goals!

Destined for golfing greatness from a very early age, McIlroy is truly one of the games superstars.  A TaylorMade and Nike Golf athlete, McIlroy is one of the game's dominant figures with 4 career Major wins.  With a wonderful, free-flowing technique and great personality, "Rors" is huge crowd favourite wherever he play across the globe.

What Rory said about his latest win
"Being me is good enough. Maybe the last few months I was trying to add things to my game, take things away. When I do the things I do well, this is what I’m capable of...winning a lot of events on the PGA Tour and being the number one player in the world. It’s just a matter of me getting back to playing golf and playing golf my way. That starts with being creative and being visual and sifting through the technical thoughts."

A closer look at Rory's technique

Swing Thoughts or "Freewheeling"

McIlroy's win got me thinking about technique a little bit.  It was really upsetting but also quite spiriting to see McIlroy in tears after his Ryder Cup Singles win over Olympic Champion Xander Schauffele.  Sure, it was horrible to see one of my favourite sports people that upset but it really drove home how much these heroes of the game care about The Ryder Cup.

You could label McIlroy as a natural golfer.  A seemingly effortless swing and one not too encumbered with loads of technical thoughts.  That said, his work with Pete Cowen has been well publicised this year so it was very refreshing to hear his comments about playing his way.  I played behind McIlroy in a Challenge Tour event when he was 14!  I was on the range warming up and this 'kid' next to me was just ripping it with the most natural looking swing I had ever seen.  It wasn't just his ball striking that stuck with me.  It was the fact he had the world's brightest J Lindeberg waterproof trousers on!  I didn't know who he was then, but I sure did a couple of years later!

For most people golf is a real challenge and even at high levels, there is delicate balance of working with swing thoughts against just going out and playing.  I have found through experience, that when playing well, a swing thought has been practiced enought can become part of just 'hitting it' so you can play without much thinking.  It's certainly nice to see McIlroy getting back to his natural flow.
